LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 7, 2013) — The University of Kentucky Dental Outreach Program announces Allison Bethel, a third year dental student from the UK College of Dentistry, will be participating in a summer internship at the UK Dan A. Martin, M.D. Dental Clinic in Madisonville, Ky., from June 10-July 5th.
Bethel, the daughter of Keith and Peggy Bethel, from Greenville, Ky., is in the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program specializing in periodontics.
The UK Dan A. Martin M.D. Dental Clinic is located within the Hopkins County Health Department and provides access to dental services for those insured with Kentucky Managed Care Insurance companies (Coventry Cares, WellCare, Kentucky Spirit), Kentucky Medicaid, and those children enrolled in the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) dental plans. The clinic is a resource for pregnant women and children for early prevention dental services. Treatment of palliative dental pain is also offered for uninsured children and adults at a reduced price at the safety net dental clinic. Those services provided by student dentist Allison Bethel, under the supervision of Dr. Laura Hancock, are offered based on a reduced student fee schedule, which will benefit the dentally uninsured during her rotation.
The dental team from the UK Dan A. Martin M.D. Dental Clinic also provides dental prevention services to area schools.
"We look forward to having Allison Bethel available to accommodate additional patients this summer for comprehensive dental services," Hancock said.
In addition to patient care, Bethel will participate in the 4th Annual Oral Health Summit hosted by the Western Kentucky Regional Dental Coalition to be held June 14th in Madisonville. The Oral Health Summit will provide community dental professionals and oral health advocates information on the latest oral health initiatives in the state, an update on the status of the health insurance exchanges, and more information regarding regional and statewide prescription drug abuse.
