The estimated one in 1.5 million people who experience the newly identified rare disorder can see changes in behavior and personality, seizures and agitation. This all results from the production of antibodies against the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and has become known as anti-NMDA-receptor encephalitis. The syndrome affects primarily young women and evolves over days to weeks. It can present as a psychosis like that seen in schizophrenia.
